Rough Riders Flame Out Against Hinton, Knickerbockers Friday, June 5th , 1959 The Washington Rough Riders had no answer today for New York Knickerbockers pitcher Herb Hinton. They failed to score a single run against him, losing 4-0. Washington managed only 4 hits off Hinton, who had 8 strikeouts. The extraordinarily popular Hinton got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd. "Knickerbockers fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible." On the season Hinton has compiled a 3-2 mark with a 4.03 ERA in 7 starts. In pitching 44.2 innings he has 27 strikeouts and 7 walks while limiting the opposition to a .246 batting average.
