Cardenas Shines in 4-0 Gem
Thursday, May 18th , 1972
Bruce Cardenas of the Denver Burros was on top of his game.

The 31-year-old tantalized the Chicago Traders with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 4-0.

"He had the changeup working," Chicago manager Larry Link said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Denver hurler had 6 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 6 hits in his complete-game effort.

Cardenas told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

This season, Cardenas has compiled a 4-3 mark, 2.17 ERA and made 9 starts.
