Wednesday, May 1st , 1974
The New York Knickerbockers were almost helpless in their 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Quakers and hurler Mel Hartman. Hartman kept the Knickerbockers confused all game, spinning a 2-hit shutout.
"Tip your hat to Hartman," New York manager Timothy Widholm said in a postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night."
The 33-year-old right-hander had no walks and 9 strikeouts in a strong performance.
"It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Hartman said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way."
To date Hartman is 2-2 in 5 starts with a 2.31 ERA and has 21 strikeouts in 39 innings.
