Fulton Spins 5-0 Shutout
Thursday, June 15th , 1972
Dennis Fulton of the San Francisco Seagulls was on top of his game.
The 40-year-old tantalized the New York Empires with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 5-0.
"He had the changeup working," New York manager Jose Placeholder said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The San Francisco hurler had 4 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 6 hits in his complete-game effort.
Fulton told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
On the season, Fulton has compiled a 5-3 mark with a 2.50 ERA in 9 starts. In pitching 75.2 innings he has 37 strikeouts and 17 walks while limiting the opposition to a .205 batting average.
