Terriers, Shurtleff Blank Seattle, 7-0
Thursday, July 22nd , 1976
The Boston Terriers shut out the Seattle Emeralds, 7-0, behind the strong pitching of Bruce Shurtleff. Shurtleff surrendered only 5 hits in recording the complete-game victory, and struck out 9.
Following the last out, Shurtleff appeared to celebrate a little too boisterously for Seattle manager Mark Velez, who could be seen scolding the famously outspoken left-hander as the clubs left the field. Shurtleff's own manager then intervened with some words for his counterpart.
The Emeralds skipper would not comment on the exchange but, at the Terriers press conference, Shurtleff confirmed that it was regarding the celebration.
"He basically told me I was being a lousy winner," Shurtleff said.
"And I told him he was being a lousy loser," Boston manager Phil Palapa added.
To date this year, in 22 starts, Shurtleff has crafted a 3-10 mark with a 2.81 ERA.
