Abril Hurls Knickerbockers to 5-0 Shutout Win
Sunday, July 23rd , 1972
Danny Abril led the New York Knickerbockers to a shutout victory, 5-0, over the Brooklyn Bluebirds at Knickerbocker Stadium.
"My pitching coach told me before the game just to bear down and focus," Abril recalled later. "He said no one was going to hit me if I'm throwing a good breaking ball with good location."
Abril yielded 4 hits and had 8 strikeouts and 1 walk in the standout performance.
"I thought he put the ball where he wanted to," Brooklyn manager John Meeker said. "And that's just about the whole secret to pitching."
In 20 starts this year, Abril has crafted a 9-8 record and a 3.52 ERA.
