Toronto No Match for Gross
Wednesday, July 26th , 1972
The Toronto Hurons had no answer for Twin Cities Northmen pitcher Gerald Gross. They failed to score a single run against him, losing, 6-0. Toronto managed only 4 hits off Gross, who had 5 strikeouts.
The extraordinarily popular Gross got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd.
"Northmen fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances, but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."
Checking out his stats for the year, Gross has racked up 8 wins and 8 losses in 20 starts, posted a 2.71 ERA, and struck out 91 batters in 146.1 innings.
