New York Shuts Out Washington Behind Forbes, 5-0
Thursday, August 13th , 1970
Jack Forbes of the New York Knickerbockers was on top of his game.
The 26-year-old tantalized the Washington Eagles with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 5-0.
"He had the changeup working," Washington manager Wally Christensen said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The New York hurler had 1 strikeout, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 7 hits in his complete-game effort.
Forbes told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
Forbes has gone 10-8 this season with an ERA of 3.34 and 79 strikeouts in 148 innings pitched. Other clubs are hitting .248 against him.
