Rutherford Shackles Washington
Sunday, September 17th , 1972
The Washington Eagles had no answer for Brooklyn Bluebirds pitcher Damon Rutherford. They failed to score a single run against him, losing, 2-0. Washington managed only 4 hits off Rutherford, who had 5 strikeouts.

The extraordinarily popular Rutherford got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd.

"Bluebirds fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances, but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."

To date this season, Rutherford is 9-15 with 31 starts and an ERA of 3.70 with 117 strikeouts in 233.1 innings.
